Και θα έχουμε την ευτυχή σύμπτωση, μαζί με τις ταινίες του Rushnan Jaleel να έχουμε και το Our Hands are Empty, του SJ Ramir.
Πρόγραμμα 19.00 Our Hands are Empty, SJ Ramir The Angel of Forms, Rushnan Jaleel The Dithering Veil, Rushnan Jaleel in thin air, Rushnan Jaleel Out Iris, Rushnan Jaleel Παρουσία του δημιουργού Rushnan Jaleel
18/10 ~ 19.00

The Angel of Forms (Rushnan Jaleel) (2023, Ινδία, 17') Το όνειρο ενός υδάτινου όντος (μιας νεράιδας των υδάτων / undine).

The Dithering Veil - Rushnan Jaleel (2025, Ινδία, 16')

Out Iris -Rushnan Jaleel (2026, Ινδία, 20')
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Sunday we continue our screenings in the caves of Athens. We head up Hymettus and the lion's cave where a live tribute to Rushnan Jaleel and his films will take place.
We will watch all 4 of his films. Films that fall –like a language on their own- into non-representational/descriptive cinema. This is the cinema of textures. A genre of cinema that seems to monopolize analog film.
What? Filming in low light conditions with a digital camera? No way, the digital grain will ruin everything. Filming a subject without a macro lens, no! The camera sensor is not for that. Ideas that exist more or less as stereotypes in filmmaking, disappear here. The films do not exist to reproduce what has been established as "beautiful" or "aesthetically appropriate". No. The films use the medium, they search for its language, which means they test it to its limits. What if they can write with what is considered a "flaw"? Yes, even better! The very language of the medium moves forward this way.
Rushnan Jaleel and his scotographies, are monastic films. With the obsession and persistence of the analog medium auteurs. Even if they get their final form through processing on digital computers.
The first time we played a film by Rushnan Jaleel, was in that nomadic screening in Exarcheia, where we went around from abandoned house to abandoned house and screened films, and there we had screened The Angel of Forms. It is Rushnan Jaleel's first film, he had sent it to us, I knew nothing about him. And it is truly rare for me to see a film that reminds me of so few things.
It had brought to my mind back then, perhaps, another favorite director. SJ Ramir, whose work is digital, made in extreme low-light conditions, which similarly rests on the flaw of the medium itself. And we will have the fortunate coincidence, along with Rushnan Jaleel's films to also have Our Hands are Empty, by SJ Ramir. A film that is essentially a recent redux.
Program 19.00 Our Hands are Empty, SJ Ramir The Angel of Forms, Rushnan Jaleel The Dithering Veil, Rushnan Jaleel in thin air, Rushnan Jaleel Out Iris, Rushnan Jaleel In the presence of the creator Rushnan Jaleel
Where/When 18/10 ~ 19.00 At the Lion's cave
Access: There is a moderate (not prohibitive) dirt road from the Papagou cemetery (2.6 km) that brings you very close to the cave. There are also hiking trails, either from Glyka Nera or from the Hunter's Monastery. The neighboring Bat cave is also worth a visit.
Free Entrance / There is a generosity box at the venue.
Our Hands Αre Empty - SJ Ramir (2025, Australia, 10') To understand life is to know that much of it is lived in the dark - there is very little daylight in our understanding or comprehension. To find truth, we need to reach out for it, but most often when we pull our hands back to examine what we have found, our hands are empty…
Surrounded by jungle, a woman stands alone in a garden, as a wandering spirit enters her home.
The Angel of Forms (Rushnan Jaleel) (2023, , 17') The dream of an undinal being. A spectral transmission between the screen and the viewer gives birth to an amorphous entity that dwells in the water.
The Dithering Veil - Rushnan Jaleel (2025, India, 16')
A silent evocation of perception and memory; an attempt to navigate the flotsam of elliptical impressions, earthly phenomena and dreamed images that linger and interpenetrate on the surface of thought.
in thin air - Rushnan Jaleel (2025, Ινδία, 12') ‘In thin air’ attempts to touch the invisible plane of pure image wedged between camera and subject, to move the world within the frame rather than turning the frame towards the world. Ruptures in the image allow visible subjects to be woven and sifted through the weave of the edit like strands of hair through fingers.
Out Iris -Rushnan Jaleel (2026, India, 20')
A flickering survey of worlds both urban and botanical. The frame as an unsettled space, a centre that cannot hold, suspended in its own vertigo. Spontaneous changes – in scale, velocity and depth – register at different levels, for each viewing, for each viewer.
